the government mantra is that the regulations allow, therefore it is a good thing for ministers to get the best, flashy, bling bling cars they can. shouldn’t the discussion be turned to: in these difficult times, why not change the regulations? make ministries purchase the cars up to a set limit and have the cars only used for official travel. define what car is purchased and buy them as a group purchase and therefore as a purchase at a discount. this current system just seems rife with possibilities for problems…

Minister ! now that you see what the voters and taxpayers want and need, you can do the right and good thing: trade those cars for MUCH less expensive ones – but still good and reliable, which will serve you for several years. Then donate the money to schools and clinics.

Demonstrate to us that an anc member can do the good and right thing. we are waiting to see now that you have heard what your people want and need.

There is something wrong with us, South Africans! When there is nothing to cry about, we kick and pinch ourselves and start crying! There is nothing wrong with the purchase of the two cars by the minister since it was done in accordance with regulations. Is it because these cars are luxurious and a ‘former terrorist’ does not deserve any good life after freedom? Even during apartheid, those bantustan leaders drove Mercs and BMW 745is, bulletproofed, there was no outcry.Since 1994, all ministers, premiers etc have always been driven in the lap of luxury, what has changed now? The orders for these cars will surely go a long way in saving jobs in the manufaturing sector, one of the most hit by the recession. Do we want BMW and other car manufactures to lay off more workers, then again blame the goverment for failing to protect jobs? Maybe we should just move parliament to Pretoria/Midrand as once suggested in the 90s, in that way the minister will buy only one car and all of us will be satisfied. Maybe we should review the Ministerial Handbook that gives guidance to ministers on these and other matters. How many boxers have died or suffered permanent brain damage as a result of being pumelled by heavy slugs in the ring? Did we condemn or jail the other boxer who inflicted injuries in a fair and regulated fight? Grow up South Africans, stop being cry babies! i surely do not want to see workers losing their jobs because the govt is playing scrooge with our money, interest rates were lowered in order to encourage spending, govt has committed itself to more spending to spur economic growth, and that is exactly what is happening here, jobs are being created by govt in the private sector. I also support the renovations done in Zuma’s house for millions, none of that money goes into Zuma or Nyanda’s pockets but to the businesses, contractors and the workers!

The ANC under Jacob Zuma is just as arrogant and aloof as the Thabo Mbeki administration. You would think the Communications minister would have a sharper understanding about perceptions and leading by example.

Hi

I think PAPA smoked something before writing his article.
Clear lyhe does not mind the abuse of the money he pays for tax or maybe he doesn’t pay any tax that he condones such lavish spending.
I don’t know which high rise Sandton apartment he is living in but people are suffering and that R2 Mil will make a difference to thousands of children that need it more than a minister driving in a fancy BMW oh sorry 2 BMW’s .

Come to the townships my brother then you ccan explain to kids why they can’t have a bowl of porridge or a sandwich for lunch because our minister has decided to spend it on buy to BMW’s

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE

What are lot whinging about? You voted the regime into power. In about 20 years the masses will learn that blind loyalty just doesn’t work [that's doesn't include the past 15 years of ANC arrogance & inner circle self enrichment]. So be patient, vote ANC for the next 4 elections & then watch the penny drop & the blinkers lift. In the interim, zip it & enjoy the fruits of your votes.

@Papa it always amazes me how the post 1994 govt uses the apartheid govt actions to justify its actions… two wrongs do not make a right! S Papa everytime you find yourself falling into that trap then ask yourself what is freedom really? The liberation struggle was about freeing and uplifting the poor masses of SA yet those very people are still suffering unless you haven’t seen the service dlivery protests yet your sacred minister can splash out on 2 x cars to save BMW hahaha pls man then maybe he should rather have bought 10 cars @R250k instead kept two and donated 8 to charity because then my tax money is at least helping someone!

I have had the opportunity to read George Owell’s Animal Farm ampteenth times and have learned one thing: Ideaological confusion! The fruit of liberty is suppossed to be shared by all, but it looks like some of us are taking everything just to let them rot while others do know the taste, let alone the smell. Revolution is part of human nature, and it’s certain. poverty strengthens the spirit of the poor and wealth weakens the soul of the rich. To justify extreme wealth is much the same as justifying extreme poverty since the two are natural twins. Peter Tosh said, ‘a rich man’s heaven is a poor man’s hell’, Whether revolutionary or appressor, it does not matter!. The logic is simple, we all look at the poor through our ‘glasshouses’. Who cares!!!

We are just fussing about little things. However, I beleive that the fussing is good for democracy so that the current leadership knows that people are watching them all the way.

minister safety is important just like the miner who desrves safety when he goes underground for mining. politics over transportation of ministries should not make politics at all.but lets talk about the underspending of govermentr departments as an issues.american secretaries they more save transport than our ministers.otherwise who will expose his to carnage and unsave working enviroments with toyata corollas in that level of goverments office.
