I spent a few hours at the scene, and helped to shift one over the rocks back into shallow water. It managed to swim off again. Hopefully it didn’t just return to the beach further up. It was a sad spectacle, and one I would never forget. If researchers were in place to take a wide variety of environmental data for analysis it might have helped us understand why these majestic animals commit suicide. Yet we still do not fully understand how they really navigate, and what role the magnetic fields of the planet plays in this regard. It may well remain a mystery to us for good.
Seeing whales die like this is unnerving, as it could potentially be a pointer to some environmental upheaval or natural disaster in the pipeline not too far in the future.

The death of the beached whales is sad. But it’s funny how whales and dolphins get everyone very emotional while perlemoen poaching, for example, leaves nearly everyone unmoved.

I went down to see what was going on in the afternoon. There were loads of people. It was quite a sight, but nonetheless sad. By the time I got there they had started shooting them. The had tried to put some of them back but they kept re-beaching themselves. The whales were dying of organ failure and dehydration. They also start to get crushed by their own body weight, so although it is horrible to shoot them, it is the most humane thing to do. The sound of the gun was pretty awful though. Big front end loaders where there to move the whales’ bodies.

I was one of the many volunteers to help. There are a lot unknown factors on how to save beached whales.There were a lot of unsuccessful attempts, by helping the whale back into the sea and only to discover that the whale comes right back onto the beach. This was very distressing for all the very cold and tired volunteers.Towards the end of the day myself and a few others where very determined to save one or two whales, especially when we heard the gun shots .I felt it really helped to swim out with the whale passed the breakers then to keep pointing the head out to sea and to stay with the whale at least up to 45 min .This seemed to help the whale recover from the stress and tiredness .After we spent that amount of time with the whale we discovered that the whale only then had enough energy to swim out to sea.There was a young surfer male in our group who then swam with the whale even further out .We did not see those whales return back to the beach. I truly believe staying with the whale in the water facing it’s head out to sea and keeping it upright and calm for at least 45 min truly helps and prevents the whale from wanting to beach themselves again.What most people were doing is getting the whale past the breaker then leaving them .I think the whale is too stressed and tired to be left alone and needs helpers to assist the whale with at least a 45 min recovery time .It was a very sad day and yet very uplifting to see so many caring people.
